Wall Connector vs. Mobile Connector: Matching the Equipment to Your Panel
The Tesla Wall Connector is a hardwired unit. Tesla’s installation manual tells installers to hardwire the branch circuit and not to install a cord-and-plug connection. A NEMA 14-50 outlet is for the Tesla Mobile Connector or another listed corded charger, not for the Wall Connector.
That difference sets the scope of the job. A hardwired Wall Connector on a 60-amp circuit delivers up to 48 amps, roughly 44 miles of range per hour on a Model 3 or Model Y. A Mobile Connector on a NEMA 14-50 outlet delivers 32 amps, closer to 30 miles per hour, and stays portable if you move.
Both paths need a dedicated 240-volt circuit and a panel that supports it. If your service is full or the panel is dated, start with electrical panel service and replacement. Comparing non-Tesla equipment too? See our EV charger installation page.

Circuit Sizing
60A Breaker, 48A Charging, and Panel Capacity
The Wall Connector delivers up to 48 amps, about 11.5 kW. Electrical code sizes continuous loads at 125 percent, so 48 amps of charging calls for a 60-amp breaker and conductors rated to match. That is the top of the range, not the only setting.
The unit configures down the scale during commissioning: a 60-amp breaker for 48-amp output, 50 for 40, 40 for 32, 30 for 24, and lower options down to a 15-amp circuit. If your panel cannot carry another 60-amp circuit, dialing the charger back usually costs far less than a service upgrade, and overnight charging at 32 or 40 amps refills a daily commute with hours to spare.
A load calculation settles this, not a guess. We check service size, panel bus rating, available breaker space, and existing demand from HVAC, range, dryer, water heater, and any second vehicle. When capacity falls short, the options are a lower charger setting, load management, or an electrical panel upgrade. For what those paths cost in practice, see PowerRoute’s breakdown of EV charger installation costs in Los Angeles. Many owners now add EV charging first. Read why LA property owners add EV chargers before panel upgrades.
Permits & Inspection
Permits and Inspection in Van Nuys
A new 240-volt branch circuit requires an electrical permit and an inspection. That holds across California under Title 24 Part 3, the California Electrical Code, and it applies to a hardwired Wall Connector circuit and to a NEMA 14-50 outlet installed for a Mobile Connector.
Van Nuys is in the City of Los Angeles, so the permit runs through LADBS. In Pasadena it runs through the city Building and Safety Division. State law directs cities to use an expedited, streamlined process for residential EV charging installations, so most single-family permits are issued online or over the counter instead of going to plan check.
We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and meet the inspector on site. A closed permit matters later too. Utility rebate programs ask for it, and an unpermitted 240-volt circuit turns into a negotiating point at resale.
Panel work changes the timeline. If the job includes a service upgrade or a new panel, utility coordination gets added to the schedule. See electrical panel service and replacement for what that involves.

Why Tesla Owners Choose PowerRoute
Panel-First Planning
The plan starts with your service capacity and panel condition, not with a flat price pulled off a price list.
Hardwired to Spec
We hardwire the Wall Connector to Tesla’s published spec, and say so plainly when a Mobile Connector on a NEMA 14-50 outlet is the better fit for your panel and budget.
Honest Amperage Advice
If 48 amps means a service upgrade you do not need, we show you what 32 or 40 amps looks like for your actual driving.
Permit and Inspection Handled
We pull the permit, meet the inspector, and close it out, which keeps rebate applications and future resale clean.
Powershare and Multi-Unit
Cybertruck Powershare, second Wall Connectors, and power sharing across units are planned up front, not improvised on site.
Commissioned Before Handoff
The unit is set to the correct amperage, connected in the Tesla app, and verified charging your vehicle before we leave.
What Affects Tesla Wall Connector Installation Cost
A site evaluation gives a better answer than a flat online price, because the panel and the run to the parking spot drive most of the cost. A hardwired Wall Connector on a panel with spare capacity and a short run sits at the low end of our range for labor, materials, and permit, not counting the unit itself. Long runs, exterior conduit, or trenching move it up.
Panel work changes the shape of the number. Adding a subpanel or upgrading the service is a separate scope, priced on the utility, the service size, and whether the meter or mast is involved. Confirm that scope through electrical panel service and replacement before you set a budget.
Rebates offset part of it. LADWP, which serves Van Nuys, runs its own program, as do Glendale Water and Power and Burbank Water and Power. Pasadena Water and Power currently offers a residential rebate for Wi-Fi connected Level 2 chargers, and the Wall Connector qualifies as a connected unit. The SCE Charge Ready Home program targets panel upgrades for income-qualified and disadvantaged-community customers in SCE territory. Amounts, caps, and eligibility change, so confirm current terms with your utility before counting on a figure. The Pasadena Water and Power and SCE programs we checked both require a closed electrical permit, so keep the paperwork.
Panel Capacity
Available service capacity, breaker space, panel condition, and whether load management or an upgrade is required.
Distance and Route
Run length from panel to parking spot, wall access, conduit, trenching, and whether the run is interior or exterior.
Charger Amperage
The setting your panel supports, from 48 amps on a 60-amp circuit down to 16 amps on a 20-amp circuit, changes conductor size, breaker, and labor.
Permits and Utility Work
Permit fees, inspection, and any utility coordination for a service upgrade, meter change, or mast work.
Installation Planning
Details That Shape a Tesla Wall Connector Project
The right installation depends on the electrical system, where the car parks, which Tesla you drive, and how you charge. These are the details we work through with you.
Panel Capacity & Space
Existing service, connected loads, panel condition, and open breaker space decide whether 48-amp charging is realistic here.
Planning step: run a load calculation, then choose between a lower charger setting, load management, or a panel upgrade.
Circuit Route & Distance
Distance, wall access, conduit, trenching, and parking placement change conductor size and labor hours.
Planning step: pick a practical, code-conscious route before the scope and the price are fixed.
Wall Connector or Mobile Connector
The Wall Connector hardwires and reaches 48 amps. A NEMA 14-50 outlet serves the portable Mobile Connector at 32 amps.
Planning step: match the equipment to your panel capacity and how you actually charge.
Powershare and Home Backup
Powershare scope depends on the home. Without a Powerwall it takes a Powershare Gateway and a Universal Wall Connector. With a Powerwall, Tesla lists the Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3 and has not yet enabled Powershare for those configurations.
Planning step: tell us the Tesla model, whether you have a Powerwall, and whether home backup is part of the goal.
Multiple Wall Connectors
Wall Connectors can share one circuit and split available power, which often avoids a second 60-amp circuit in a two-car household.
Planning step: confirm how many vehicles charge now and how many the property should support later.
Permits and Rebate Documents
Permit requirements and utility rebate eligibility depend on the city and the utility, and both change without notice.
Planning step: verify current requirements with the city and your utility rather than an older forum thread.

I haven’t personally hired PowerRoute Electric for their services, but I’ve worked alongside them on several jobs over the past year and a half before it was out to the public. From what I’ve seen firsthand, they take their work seriously. They show up on time, communicate clearly, and put effort into getting the job done right. Their team is respectful and seems to care about doing things the right way, not just the fast way. They’re not perfect—no company is—but they’ve consistently shown up and done what they said they would, which goes a long way in this line of work. If you’re considering hiring them, based on what I’ve experienced working with them on-site, they’re reliable and professional. I’d trust them on a job of my own.Posted on Google![]()

Tesla Wall Connector Installation FAQs
Common questions about Tesla Wall Connector installation in Van Nuys and across the Valley
No. Tesla’s Wall Connector installation manual tells installers to hardwire the branch circuit and not to use a cord-and-plug connection. A NEMA 14-50 outlet is for the Mobile Connector or another listed corded charger. Hardwired on a 60-amp circuit, the Wall Connector delivers up to 48 amps, about 44 miles of range per hour on a Model 3 or Model Y. A Mobile Connector on a 14-50 outlet delivers 32 amps and stays portable. We look at your panel and your daily driving before recommending one.
It depends on the output you want. Electrical code sizes continuous loads at 125 percent, so 48-amp charging needs a 60-amp breaker with conductors rated to match. The Wall Connector can also be set to 40 amps on a 50-amp breaker, 32 amps on a 40-amp breaker, and lower settings down to a 15-amp circuit. We set the amperage during commissioning to match what your panel supports.
Not always. A load calculation answers it. Many homes with 200-amp service and open breaker space take a 60-amp charging circuit without changes. Older 100-amp services, full panels, and homes with electric HVAC, range, dryer, and a second EV often need a subpanel, load management, or a service upgrade. Where capacity is tight, running the charger at 32 or 40 amps is frequently the cheaper answer.
Yes. A new 240-volt branch circuit requires an electrical permit and an inspection under the California Electrical Code. Van Nuys and other Los Angeles permits run through LADBS, and Pasadena permits through the city Building and Safety Division. State law directs cities to use an expedited process for residential EV charging, so most single-family permits are issued without plan check. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.
There is no flat price, because the panel and the run to the parking spot drive most of the cost. A hardwired install on a panel with spare capacity and a short run is the low end. Long runs, exterior conduit, and trenching move it up. A subpanel or a service upgrade is a separate scope on top of the charging circuit. Send a photo of your panel and the parking location and we will come back with a real number.
It depends on your utility. Van Nuys is served by LADWP, which runs its own program, as do Glendale Water and Power and Burbank Water and Power. Pasadena Water and Power currently offers a residential rebate for Wi-Fi connected Level 2 chargers, and the Wall Connector qualifies as a connected unit. The SCE Charge Ready Home program covers panel upgrades for income-qualified and disadvantaged-community customers in SCE territory, which includes Altadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, and Alhambra. Amounts and eligibility change, and every program we know of requires a closed permit, so confirm current terms with your utility.
Yes. Wall Connectors support power sharing, so multiple units on one circuit split the available current instead of each needing its own 60-amp feed. For most two-car garages that is the practical way to charge both vehicles without a service upgrade. Charging is slower when both cars draw at the same time.
Yes, with the right connector. The standard Wall Connector uses the North American Charging Standard connector, so most non-Tesla EVs with a J1772 inlet need an adapter. The Universal Wall Connector includes a built-in J1772 adapter, which is the cleaner choice for a mixed-vehicle household. Tell us which vehicles will charge and we will confirm what fits.
Not on its own. The Wall Connector charges the vehicle. Cybertruck Powershare can send power back to the home, and the hardware depends on your setup. Without a Powerwall, Tesla requires a Powershare Gateway and a Universal Wall Connector. With a Powerwall, Tesla lists the Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3, and says Powershare for Powerwall homes is coming through an over-the-air update. Either way it is a separate scope from a standard Wall Connector install, so tell us up front if backup is the goal.
