Once the motor, housing, or internal seals fail, replacement is normally the better use of your money. Most disposals give roughly 8 to 15 years of service depending on how hard they are worked.

Disposal Problems

Grease, food residue, and soap buildup can collect farther inside the branch drain. Installing a new disposal will not clear a blocked drainpipe. If water drains slowly or backs up into the other side of the sink, the kitchen line may require professional drain cleaning.
A garbage disposal is designed to process limited amounts of food residue. It should not be used as a substitute for a trash can.
