Why a Circuit Breaker Trips: Overload, Short Circuit, Ground Fault, or a Failed Breaker

Four conditions open a breaker, and each one points to a different repair. Guessing between them is how homeowners end up paying for a new breaker on a circuit with a wiring fault still in it.

An overload means the circuit is drawing more current than its wire and breaker are rated to carry. A 15-amp circuit holds roughly 1,440 watts of continuous load. Run a space heater and a microwave off the same bedroom circuit and it opens. The fix is moving load or adding a dedicated circuit. Never a larger breaker on the same wire.

A short circuit happens when a hot conductor touches a neutral or a ground. Current spikes and the breaker opens instantly. Damaged insulation, a crushed cable behind drywall, a failing appliance, or rodent damage in an attic all produce shorts.

A ground fault sends current outside its intended path, often into a metal box or to earth. GFCI protection watches for the imbalance and opens in a fraction of a second.

A failed breaker is the fourth case, and the one most often missed. Breakers wear. After years of heat cycling and repeated trips, the mechanism weakens and starts opening at loads it used to hold. Nothing on the circuit is wrong. The device is finished.

Nuisance Trip or Real Fault? How to Tell the Difference

One trip after plugging in a hair dryer reads very differently from a breaker opening with nothing running. Run these four checks before you call, and tell the technician what you found. It shortens the diagnostic time and the bill.

It Trips Under Load

The breaker holds until a specific appliance starts, then opens. Points to an overload or a failing appliance. Unplug the device, reset once, and retry the circuit without it.

It Trips With Nothing On

Nothing is plugged in and it still opens. Points to a fault in the fixed wiring or a worn breaker. Stop resetting and leave the handle off until the circuit is tested.

It Trips Instantly

The handle will not stay up for even a second. Immediate tripping points to a short circuit or a ground fault, not an overload. An overload takes seconds to minutes to open a breaker.

It Trips at the Same Time Daily

A timed trip usually follows a scheduled load: a pool pump, irrigation timer, well pump, or an HVAC cycle. Note the time of day. It points the technician straight at the circuit.

AFCI and GFCI Breakers Trip for Different Reasons

Two protective breakers sit side by side in the panel and behave nothing alike. Treating an arc-fault trip like an overload wastes a service call. The California Electrical Code requires both in defined areas of a home, so most panels built or updated in the last two decades hold at least a few of each.

What an AFCI Detects

Arc-fault breakers watch for the electrical signature of arcing across a damaged or loose connection. Bedrooms, living areas, and most habitable rooms require them under current code.

Common AFCI Nuisance Trips

Some vacuum motors, older power tools, and certain LED drivers produce electrical noise an arc-fault breaker reads as arcing. A shared neutral between two circuits is another frequent cause.

What a GFCI Detects

Ground-fault breakers compare current leaving the circuit against current returning. An imbalance around 5 milliamps opens the device in a fraction of a second.

Common GFCI Nuisance Trips

Moisture in an outdoor box, a long circuit run, or an appliance with a small internal leak will open a GFCI. Water intrusion is the first thing we check on exterior and garage circuits.

A Breaker That Will Not Reset, and Signs to Stop and Call

Resetting a breaker over and over is the most common mistake homeowners make. The breaker is doing its job. Every reset pushes current back into whatever opened it. Four conditions mean you leave the handle off and call.

The Handle Springs Back

Push the handle fully to OFF first, then to ON. Many breakers will not latch unless reset from the full off position. If it still springs back, the fault is live or the breaker has failed.

Warm Panel or Warm Breaker

A breaker or panel cover warm to the touch signals a loose termination or a failing device. Shut off the main if you are able to do so safely, then call. Do not remove the panel cover.

Buzzing, Humming, or Crackling

Sound coming from a panel points to arcing across a loose connection or a worn bus. Stop using the circuit and book a same-day visit rather than waiting for it to clear on its own.

Burning Smell or Scorch Marks

A sharp plastic or fish-like odor near the panel, or any discoloration on the cover or around a breaker, needs immediate attention. Shut the main off if it is safe and call right away.

Repair the Circuit, Replace the Breaker, or Replace the Panel

Three different jobs sit behind the same symptom, and the price gap between them is wide. This is the order we work through, and the point where a panel replacement becomes the better spend rather than another circuit repair. Repair the Circuit First

When testing finds the fault on the branch circuit, the repair is the wiring, a device, or an appliance. The breaker stays in place. Most tripping calls end right here.

Replace the Breaker

A breaker opening below its rating, refusing to reset on a proven-clean circuit, or showing heat damage at the bus gets replaced with a device listed for your panel line.

Redistribute or Add a Circuit

Repeated overloads on a kitchen, garage, or home-office circuit are a capacity problem, not a breaker problem. A dedicated circuit solves it without touching the panel.

Replace the Panel

No open breaker spaces, an obsolete brand, a corroded bus, or a service too small for the house moves the job to electrical panel replacement.

Zinsco and Federal Pacific Breakers Should Not Be Reset and Reused

Two brands from mid-century California housing turn up constantly in Pasadena and across the San Fernando Valley. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels were installed widely into the 1970s, and plenty are still in service.

Independent testing and decades of field reports have raised long-standing questions about whether some breakers in these panels open reliably on a fault. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers have been the subject of testing reporting elevated failure-to-trip rates. Zinsco panels are commonly found with damage where the breaker clips onto the aluminum bus bar, which produces heat at the connection. Neither line is still manufactured under its original listing.

The practical effect for you: replacement breakers for both are difficult to source, refurbished units carry unknown service history, and home inspectors and insurers routinely flag these panels during a sale or a policy review. We do not reset a suspect breaker in either panel and hand it back. We assess the panel and quote the replacement.

Is it safe to keep resetting a tripped breaker?
