The Tesla Wall Connector is a hardwired unit. Tesla’s installation manual tells installers to hardwire the branch circuit and not to install a cord-and-plug connection. A NEMA 14-50 outlet is for the Tesla Mobile Connector or another listed corded charger, not for the Wall Connector.
That difference sets the scope of the job. A hardwired Wall Connector on a 60-amp circuit delivers up to 48 amps, roughly 44 miles of range per hour on a Model 3 or Model Y. A Mobile Connector on a NEMA 14-50 outlet delivers 32 amps, closer to 30 miles per hour, and stays portable if you move.

Circuit Sizing
The Wall Connector delivers up to 48 amps, about 11.5 kW. Electrical code sizes continuous loads at 125 percent, so 48 amps of charging calls for a 60-amp breaker and conductors rated to match. That is the top of the range, not the only setting.
The unit configures down the scale during commissioning: a 60-amp breaker for 48-amp output, 50 for 40, 40 for 32, 30 for 24, and lower options down to a 15-amp circuit. If your panel cannot carry another 60-amp circuit, dialing the charger back usually costs far less than a service upgrade, and overnight charging at 32 or 40 amps refills a daily commute with hours to spare.
A load calculation settles this, not a guess. We check service size, panel bus rating, available breaker space, and existing demand from HVAC, range, dryer, water heater, and any second vehicle. When capacity falls short, the options are a lower charger setting, load management, or an electrical panel upgrade.
Permits & Inspection
A new 240-volt branch circuit requires an electrical permit and an inspection. That holds across California under Title 24 Part 3, the California Electrical Code, and it applies to a hardwired Wall Connector circuit and to a NEMA 14-50 outlet installed for a Mobile Connector.
In the City of Los Angeles the permit runs through LADBS. In Pasadena it runs through the city Building and Safety Division. State law directs cities to use an expedited, streamlined process for residential EV charging installations, so most single-family permits are issued online or over the counter instead of going to plan check.
We pull the permit, schedule the inspection, and meet the inspector on site. A closed permit matters later too. Utility rebate programs ask for it, and an unpermitted 240-volt circuit turns into a negotiating point at resale.
