Installing a disposal involves more than attaching a new appliance beneath the sink. The unit must fit the available cabinet space, match the household’s usage, connect properly to the kitchen drain, and receive power through an appropriate wall switch, air switch, or batch-feed control.
During installation, our team can:
If standing water, slow drainage, or recurring backups continue after the disposal is removed, the problem may be inside the kitchen drain rather than the appliance. PowerRoute can inspect the line and recommend professional drain cleaning when necessary.
No obligations. Just honest pricing and expert plumbing solutions for your property, facility, or business operations.

Feed type controls how the disposal is switched on and how scraps get into the grinding chamber. It is the first choice to make once horsepower is settled.
The common choice. A wall switch or air switch starts the motor, and scraps can be added while the unit runs.
Runs only when its stopper or cover is seated, so the chamber is closed the entire time it grinds.
Manufacturer lineups reflect the difference. InSinkErator currently lists a single batch feed model against ten continuous feed models, so replacement parts and stock are easier to find on the continuous feed side. Tell us how your kitchen is used and we will point you to the type that fits.
Household size is a rough guide, not a rule. How often you cook, what actually goes down the sink, the space in the cabinet, and how much noise you will put up with all matter. Grinding stages and build quality often make more difference day to day than horsepower on its own.

Repair or Replace
Not every disposal problem calls for a new unit. A jam, a loose slip nut, or a tripped reset can often be corrected in one visit. Once the motor, housing, or internal seals fail, replacement is normally the better use of your money. Most disposals give roughly 8 to 15 years of service depending on how hard they are worked.
The failure is mechanical, external, or electrical rather than a worn out motor.
The problem is inside the unit itself, where parts are not serviceable.
We inspect the disposal, the drain connection, and the power supply before recommending either option, then explain what each path costs.
Disposal Problems
Utensils, bones, fruit pits, and fibrous food can prevent the grinding mechanism from turning. Stop using the disposal if it becomes jammed. Repeatedly activating the switch can overheat the motor and cause additional damage.
A humming sound usually means the motor is receiving power but cannot turn. The disposal may be jammed, seized, or experiencing motor failure.
Leaks can develop around the sink flange, dishwasher connection, drain elbow, P-trap, or disposal housing. Loose connections may be repairable. A cracked or leaking disposal housing usually requires replacement.
The reset button protects the motor from overheating. One trip may occur after a jam. Frequent trips can indicate repeated overloading, a seized mechanism, an electrical problem, or a failing motor.
Food residue can collect inside the grinding chamber, splash guard, or drain connection and create persistent odors. If cleaning does not remove the smell, buildup may be trapped farther inside the kitchen drain.
Grease, food residue, and soap buildup can collect farther inside the branch drain. Installing a new disposal will not clear a blocked drainpipe. If water drains slowly or backs up into the other side of the sink, the kitchen line may require professional drain cleaning.
A garbage disposal is designed to process limited amounts of food residue. It should not be used as a substitute for a trash can.
Avoid putting the following materials into the disposal:
A disposal can be used on a septic system, but it changes the load the tank has to handle. The EPA points out that anything ground up at the sink ends up in the septic system, and that the volume of solids is one of the factors that decides how often a tank needs pumping. Household tanks are commonly pumped every three to five years and inspected at least every three years, and heavy disposal use tends to push that toward the shorter end.
Installation cost depends on the disposal you choose, the condition of the existing plumbing, the electrical setup under the sink, and whether any modifications are required. The ranges below are planning figures for the Los Angeles area, not a quote.
Replacing an existing unit
Existing disposal, a working switch or outlet, and a sound drain connection.
First disposal in the sink
No disposal has been fitted before, so the drain and power both need work.
Higher horsepower or quiet unit
A 3/4 HP or 1 HP model with sound insulation and multi stage grinding.
National cost guides put a straightforward replacement at about $200 to $550 and a first time installation at about $250 to $650, with a national average band near $300 to $600 and a high end around $750. Manufacturer list prices for 2026 run from about $129 for a 1/3 HP unit to about $399 for a 1 HP model with the finest grind. Los Angeles labor rates sit above the national average, so local projects usually land in the upper part of those bands.
We confirm the price after looking at the cabinet, the drain, and the power supply. If the kitchen line is the real problem, we will tell you that before selling you a disposal.
Brands We Install
PowerRoute installs many commonly available garbage disposal brands, including InSinkErator, Moen, and Waste King.
We are not a dealer, authorized service center, or warranty station for any manufacturer. We install units we supply and units a property owner has already bought, provided the model suits the cabinet space, the drain, and the power available under the sink.
Brand alone should not decide the purchase. Motor size, grinding stages, sound insulation, cabinet clearance, warranty length, and parts availability matter more. Disposal work is one part of our wider plumbing services.
If the same drain keeps clogging after cleaning, there may be an underlying problem inside the pipe.
01
We look at the sink, cabinet space, drain, trap, dishwasher line, and how the disposal is powered.
02
We recommend a horsepower and feed type that suits how the kitchen is actually used.
03
The existing disposal is disconnected, drained, and taken out along with the old mount if needed.
04
The sink flange and mounting assembly are seated and sealed so the joint stays watertight.
05
The new unit is lifted, locked to the mount, and aligned with the drain outlet.
06
The discharge tube, trap, and dishwasher line are connected, with the knockout plug removed when a dishwasher is present.
07
The cord, outlet, or switch is connected or verified. If new wiring is needed, our electricians can take care of it.
08
We run water, check every joint for leaks, confirm the grind and shutdown, then go over care and what not to put down it.
Service Coverage
This may be available depending on scheduling, model availability, and the condition of the existing connections.
A straightforward replacement can often be completed in one appointment. First-time installations or projects requiring electrical and drain modifications may take longer.
If the disposal has caused a serious leak, wastewater backup, or another urgent plumbing problem, contact PowerRoute about emergency plumbing services.
Garbage disposal installation involves both drain connections and electrical power. We can evaluate the plumbing, outlet, switch, and appliance connection during the same appointment.
We inspect the installation requirements and explain the expected cost before work begins, including any necessary drain or electrical modifications.
Same-day appointments may be available for common garbage disposal replacements and urgent kitchen plumbing problems.
Eligible garbage disposal installation work is backed by PowerRoute’s two-year labor warranty for added confidence after the project is completed.

I haven’t personally hired PowerRoute Electric for their services, but I’ve worked alongside them on several jobs over the past year and a half before it was out to the public. From what I’ve seen firsthand, they take their work seriously. They show up on time, communicate clearly, and put effort into getting the job done right. Their team is respectful and seems to care about doing things the right way, not just the fast way. They’re not perfect—no company is—but they’ve consistently shown up and done what they said they would, which goes a long way in this line of work. If you’re considering hiring them, based on what I’ve experienced working with them on-site, they’re reliable and professional. I’d trust them on a job of my own.Posted on Google![]()

Power Route was fast, efficient, organized and knowledgeable when working on solving my electrical issues. They went above and beyond by giving us a breakdown of what the cheaper option vs the best solution would look like in terms of cost and long term solution. Power Route was very transparent and delivered high quality work . Fixed our flickering lights, our overload issues, provided a water heater solution and installed 2 car chargers. Everything is working great and we have not had an issue. Would definitely recommend.Posted on Google![]()

Common questions about garbage disposal installation in Los Angeles
A straightforward replacement can often be completed in one to two hours. A first-time installation may take longer if the kitchen requires a new outlet, operating switch, dishwasher connection, or drain modification.
Yes. The disposal must fit the sink, cabinet space, drain position, and available electrical connection. PowerRoute will inspect the unit and installation area before beginning work.
A 1/2 HP model may be sufficient for a small household with moderate use. A 3/4 HP model generally provides stronger grinding and better resistance to jams for households that cook regularly.
Humming usually means the motor is receiving power but cannot turn. The disposal may be jammed, seized, or experiencing motor failure. Turn it off and avoid repeatedly activating the switch.
Leaks from the sink flange, dishwasher hose, drain elbow, or P-trap may be repairable. If water is leaking through the disposal housing, the unit usually needs to be replaced.
Not necessarily. A slow sink may be caused by grease or food buildup inside the kitchen drain. In that situation, the line may need drain cleaning in addition to disposal service.
Some models are compatible with properly sized septic systems. They should still be used sparingly because ground food adds solids to the septic tank.
Same-day installation may be available depending on scheduling, model availability, and the condition of the existing plumbing and electrical connections.
